Home Business

A home business is a small business that operates for the business owner’s home office. It is often a business set up by the business owner in order to sell a service or idea themselves and be their own boss. There are many advantages and disadvantages to owning a home business, but many business savvy people find the experience to be lucrative and fulfilling. Home businesses are becoming increasingly common, and most of the big and famous websites of today started out as small home businesses based in small offices. Home businesses are usually characterized by having a very small number of employees, usually immediate family of the business owner, or by lacking a shop frontage, customer parking and street advertising signs.

The History of Home Businesses

The concept of home based businesses, as opposed to the previous terminology of “cottage industry” first appeared in 1978. The phrase was coined by Marion Behr, the originator of a study to find out what businesses women throughout America were carrying on in their homes. The preview edition of the book he wrote, “Enterprising Women” wrote about the search to gather information pertaining to home workers though out the nation. Numerous magazines and organizations helped to disseminate information regarding the study. Ultimately 40,000 letters were received, many indicating the problems the respondents experienced while carrying on businesses from their homes. The problems were analyzed and confronted in two ways. In 1980 the National Alliance of Homebased Businesswomen was founded to combat the isolation expressed by the respondents as well as to fight the laws which made conducting their businesses difficult.

Soon after, “Women Working Home: The Home based Guide and Directory” by Marion Behr and Wendy Lazar was published. It contained the stories of many women who ran home based businesses throughout the country in many diverse fields, as well as information on business formation, conduct and compliance with the law. It sold 50,000 copies. During this time many national magazines wrote about these issues. At the White House Conference on Small Business in 1986 one of the major resolution was a recommendation favouring lifting restrictions on home based business.

‘Work at Home’ Scheme

A work at home scheme is a get rich quick scheme; often however, it is unfortunately a scam. The process occurs when a victim is lured in by an offer to be employed at home, a dream for many. Very often, they will be employed to do very simple tasks in a very short amount of time, but still bringing in a large amount of income which far exceeds the market rate for the type of work being carried out. The true purpose of this kind of offer is simply for the perpetrator to extort as much money as possible from the unfortunate victim.

Work-at-home schemes have been around for decades. Originally found as ads in newspapers or magazines, they have expanded to more high-tech media, such as television and radio ads, and on the Internet. However, legitimate work at home opportunities are available and do exist out there, as many people do their jobs from the comfort of their own homes, however anyone seeking such an employment opportunity must be wary of accepting a home employment offer, as only about one in 42 such ads have been determined to be legitimate. Most of the legitimate job opportunities found on the internet require some form of post-high school education, such as a college degree or certificate, or trade school, as well as some experience in the field of office work, or some other supervised settings. Additionally, many legitimate at-home jobs are not like those in schemes are portrayed to be, they are often performed at least some of the time in the company’s main office, and require a lot of self discipline as opposed to traditional working environments, plus there is a higher risk of firing too.
